How do Solar chargers work?

These simple chargers are at the cutting edge of solar power technology, a technology which has the power to change our world.

The chargers them selves are very simple devices which simply need to be plugged into whatever battery you want to charge and off you go. But what happens behind the scenes? How does the sun give you such awesome power?

Well it started over a million years ago when atoms were fused together at the centre of the sun producing photons. 8 and a half minutes ago these photons reached the surface and where they were then hurled towards earth. By putting your portable solar panel in front of these fast moving photons you are causing them to smash into silicon atoms in the panel thus 'breaking off' electrons from these atoms. The electrons then flow in a current joining up with other electrons along the way and thus produce electricity.

At least that is the simplest explanation I can think of, for more information see the page how does solar power work.

How efficient are solar powered chargers

Most modern solar panels operate at about 13% efficiency which means that they turn about 13% of the suns energy into power. While this may not sound a lot, it actually is quite high especially when compared to other every day objects such as lightbulbs which currently operate at only about 4% efficiency.
